Which Program: VirtualBox (Recommended), Bootcamp, or Parallels

To Configure and Use VirtualBox

  1. Download and install the VirtualBox application.

    1. Go to https://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Downloads.

    2. Click the OS X hosts link. A .dmg file will automatically start downloading.

    3. When the download is complete, double-click the .dmg file that you just downloaded.

    4. Right-click the VirtualBox.pkg icon.

    5. Select Open.

    6. Click the Open button.

    7. Click the Continue button.

    8. Click the Install button.

    9. When the installation is complete, click the Close button.

  2. Download the pre-made virtual machine from Virginia Tech.

    1. Go to http://network.software.vt.edu.

    2. If prompted, log on with your PID and PID password.

      1. In the Username text box, type your PID, which is the first part of your @vt.edu email address.
        (If you do not know your PID, follow the instructions at Forgot PID.)

      2. In the Password text box, type your PID password.
        (If you forgot your password, follow the instructions at Forgot PID Password.)

      3. Click the Login button.

      4. Follow the on-screen instructions to either:

    4. Click the Virtual Machine Windows 10 Education with Office 365 for VirtualBox link.

    5. After carefully reading the agreements, place a check in each check box.

    6. Click the Accept Agreement button.

    7. Click the Download Virtual Machine Windows 10 Education (1703) with Office 365 for VirtualBox - windows10-1703_office365_smr2017.ova link. The download will automatically start.

    8. Wait while the file is downloaded. This can take about 30 minutes.

  3. When the download is complete, start VirtualBox.

  4. Import the downloaded virtual machine into VirtualBox.

    1. From the File drop-down list, select Import Appliance.

    2. Select the windows10-1703-office365-smr2017.ova file that you just downloaded.

    3. Click the Continue button.

    4. Click the Import button.

    5. Wait while the import happens. This can take about 30 minutes.

  5. When the import is complete, select Win 10 with Office (64-bit).

  6. Click the Start button to launch the virtual machine. A small window will open in the top-right of the screen.

  7. The first five times this virtual machine is booted up, it will prompt to set up Google Drive which we HIGHLY recommend in case anything goes wrong with the virtual machine.

  8. You may view the Windows virtual machine in full screen mode by clicking the green button in the top-left. To exit full screen mode, on the keyboard, press Command + F

  9. To turn off the virtual machine, click the red X in the top-left corner, and select Power off the machine.

  1. Download a copy of Windows.

    1. Go to the Network Software page.

    2. Type your PID and PID password.

      2. In the Password text box, type your PID password. (If you forgot your password, follow the instructions at Forgot PID Password.)

      3. Click the Login button.

    4. Click the Microsoft Windows Software link to expand the category.

    5. If you do not see any Microsoft Windows links, then you need to buy Microsoft Windows 8 from Virginia Tech Software Sales. Save the license key that comes with the DVD.

    6. Click the Microsoft Windows 8.1 Update1 Enterprise 64-bit ISO link.

    7. After reading the license agreement, place a check in each of the check boxes.

    8. Click the Accept Agreement button.

    9. Important: Print or record the license key for your records. You will need this key later to complete activation.

    10. Click the Continue button.

    11. If prompted, choose to save the file to your computer.
  2. Burn the ISO file to a DVD. (If you purchased a DVD of Windows, skip this step, because you already have Windows on a DVD.)
    1. Insert a blank DVD into your computer.
    2. In Finder, from the Go drop-down list, select Utilities.

      Select Utilities.

    3. Double-click the Disk Utility icon.

      Double-click the Disk Utility icon.

    4. In the left pane, select the Windows 8 ISO file.

    5. Near the top of the window, click the Burn icon.

      Click the Burn icon.

    6. When prompted to confirm, click the Burn button.

      Click the Burn button.

  3. Run Bootcamp Assistant and install Windows by following all of the instructions in the following PDF from Apple: Boot Camp Installation & Setup Guide.

  4. Active Windows with Microsoft.

    1. Start Windows.

    2. Connect to the internet.

    3. Click the Start button.

      Click the Start button.

    4. Type: slui 3

    5. As you type, results will appear and change. Select slui 3.

      Select slui 3.

    6. In the Product key text box, type the license key that you obtained earlier either from Network Software or from the papers that came with your DVD.

      Type the license key.

    7. After you type the last character of the license key, Windows will automatically send the activation key.

    8. Follow the on-screen instructions and prompts to complete the activation.
