How do I download and install Oracle client software for Windows?

Answer:

  1. If you currently have Oracle client software installed, uninstall it before proceeding: Removing Oracle Database Client
  2. Determine your version of Windows by looking under the Automatic version detection results heading on the Microsoft How to determine whether a computer is running a 32-bit version or 64-bit version of the Windows operating system page.

  3. Create or sign onto an account with Oracle.com:

    • To create a new Oracle.com account, go to the Create Account page, and follow the on-screen instructions.

    • To sign onto an existing account with Oracle.com, go to the Sign In page, and follow the on-screen instructions.

  4. Download and install one of the software options below:

    • SQL Developer (recommended option)

      1. Go to the Oracle SQL Developer 4.0.3 (4.0.3.16.84) page.

      2. After reading the license agreement, select the Accept License Agreement radio button.

      3. At the top of the table, to the right of SQL Developer requires JDK 7 or above, click the Download link.

      4. Near the top of the table, under Java SE Development Kit, after reading the license agreement, select the Accept License Agreement radio button.

      5. Depending on your version of Windows:

        • If you are using a 32-bit version of Windows, to the right of Windows x86, click the jdk-XXXX-windows-i586.exe link where XXXX represents the current version number.

        • If you are using a 64-bit version of Windows, to the right of Windows x64, click the jdk-XXXX-windows-x64.exe link where XXXX represents the current version number.

      6. Save the installer file to your computer.

      7. When the download is complete, to start the installation, double-click the installer file that you just downloaded.

      8. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the installation.

    • SQL *Plus (command line installation)

      1. Go to the Instant Client Downloads page.

      2. Click the Instant Client link that is appropriate for your operating system.

      3. After reading the license agreement, select the Accept License Agreement radio button.

      4. Click the instantclient-basiclite link.

      5. Save the file to your computer.

      6. Click the instantclient-sqlplus link.

      7. Save the file to your computer.

      8. For each of the two files you downloaded:

        1. In Windows Explorer or File Explorer, right-click the file.

        2. Select Extract All.

        3. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the extraction process.

      9. In Windows Explorer or File Explorer, navigate to the instantclient-sqlplus-windows.x64 folder that was just created.

      10. Right-click the folder that starts with instantclient_.

      11. Select Cut.

      12. Click the back button that is represented by a left-facing arrow inside a circle.

      13. Right-click the folder that starts with instantclient-basiclite-windows.x64.

      14. Select Paste.

      15. If prompted to merge the folders, click the Yes button.

    • Full Oracle Client (typically for developers)

      1. Go to the Oracle Database Software Downloads page.

      2. After reading the license agreement, select the Accept License Agreement radio button.

      3. To the right of Microsoft Windows x64 (64-bit), click the See All link.

      4. After reading the license agreement, select the Accept License Agreement radio button.

      5. Near the bottom of the page, under the Oracle Database XXX Release 1 Client (12.1.0.1.0) for Microsoft Windows (x64 and 32-bit) heading, depending on your version of Windows, click either the winx64_XXX_client.zip link or the winnt_XXX_client32.zip link where XXX represents the current version number.

      6. Save the file to your computer.

      7. When the download is finished, in Windows Explorer or File Explorer, right-click the file that you just downloaded.

      8. Select Extract All.

      9. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the extraction process.

      10. Right-click the setup.exe icon.

      11. Select Run as administrator.

      12. If prompted by a user account control window, click the Yes button.

      13. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the installation. Typical selections include:

        • Select Installation Type: Runtime

        • Software Updates: Use My Oracle Support credentials for download

        • Select Product Languages: English

        • Oracle Home User Selection: Use Windows Built-in Account

        • Specify Installation Location: (default selection)

  5. Download the tnsnames file.

    1. To start saving the tnsnames.ora file, right-click the following link: tnsnames.ora.

    2. Choose to save the file.

      • In Firefox, select Save Link As....

      • In Chrome, select Save link as....

      • In Internet Explorer, select Save target as....

    3. From the Save as type: drop-down list, select All Files (*.*).

    4. Click the Save button.

    5. If prompted to enter credentials, enter your PID and PID password, and then click OK.

  6. Depending on which software you installed, move the tnsnames.ora file to the appropriate location.

    • For SQL Developer, in Windows Explorer or File Explorer, drag and drop the tnsnames.ora file into the sqldeveloper folder that was created during installation.

    • For SQL *Plus, in Windows Explorer or File Explorer, drag and drop the tnsnames.ora file into the folder that starts with instantclient that was created during installation.

    • For Full Oracle Client, in Windows Explorer or File Explorer, drag and drop the tnsnames.ora file into the [letter of the drive where Windows is installed]:\app\client\[your computer account username]\product\[version number]\client_1\network\admin\.

  7. Depending on which software you installed, start the program.

    • For SQL Developer, in the sqldeveloper folder that was created during installation, double-click the sqldeveloper.exe icon.

    • For SQL *Plus, in the folder that starts with instantclient that was created during installation, double-click the sqlplus.exe icon.

    • For Full Oracle Client:

      1. Click the Start button.

      2. Type: application development

      3. As you type, results will appear and change. Select Application Development.
