Introduction
Respondus LockDown Browser may automatically apply a restriction (“ban”) when activity outside the testing environment is detected during an exam session.
These restrictions are generated by Respondus software and prevent you from starting exams that require LockDown Browser until the ban is removed.
This article explains what a Respondus ban means, what to do if you receive one, and what to expect next.

What a Respondus Ban Means
If you receive a LockDown Browser ban, you will be unable to launch exams that require LockDown Browser. When this occurs, you will see a message with a ban reference code when you attempt to use LockDown Browser.
This message is generated automatically by Respondus and indicates that activity outside the testing environment was detected.
Because detections occur at the system level, neither TLOS nor your instructor can see the exact software or process involved.
A ban:
- Applies to your Respondus account (not your device)
- Prevents you from starting LockDown Browser exams
- Does not affect access to other areas of Canvas
- Cannot be lifted without administrator intervention
Steps to Take If You Receive a Ban
If you see a ban message:
- Contact 4Help as soon as possible and provide your ban reference code
- If you have an upcoming exam, contact your instructor(s) right away to let them know you are unable to launch LockDown Browser.
What to Expect Next
After you contact 4Help:
- Your request is routed to TLOS
- TLOS works with Respondus to review the restriction
- You will receive updates as more information becomes available
Because this process involves coordination with Respondus, timing can vary and cannot be guaranteed. In many cases, it may take several days.
If you have an upcoming assessment, continue working with your instructor to determine appropriate next steps while the request is under review.
Important Things to Know
- You cannot remove the ban yourself
- The restriction is tied to your account, not your computer
- Using a different device will not resolve the issue
- The restriction only applies to LockDown Browser exams
- Respondus does not identify specific applications in these cases, only the type of system activity detected.
After Your Ban is Lifted
Once the restriction has been lifted, you should be able to launch LockDown Browser again.
If the same system condition is still present, the ban may be applied again. To help prevent this, before attempting to start your exam:
- Restart your device
- Close all applications, including background apps
- Disable screen-sharing, recording, or communication tools
- Ensure no additional software is running alongside LockDown Browser
