Accessing Your Virginia Tech Exchange Online Account


Introduction

This article explains how to configure, set up, or connect a browser, desktop email client, or mobile device (iOS, Android) to connect to the Virginia Tech Exchange Online server.

Microsoft 365 Mail App (Exchange Online with a Web Browser)

  1. Go to the Virginia Tech Microsoft portal.
  2. If you see the sign in screen below, in the Email or phone text box type: VTusername@vt.edu.

  3. Click Next.
  4. If you are shown the Pick an account screen, click your vt.edu account and click Next.

  5. On the Virginia Tech Enter password page, enter your Hokies username and passphrase.
  6. Click Sign In.
  7. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete authentication with your second factor.
  8. Click Outlook.

  9. If you do not see Outlook in the list on the left, click All Apps to see an expanded list.

Outlook for Mac

  1. Start Outlook for Mac.
  2. If you see the Welcome to Outlook window:
    1. Click Get started.
    2. If prompted to use intelligent services, click the button corresponding to your choice.
    3. Click Start using Outlook.
  3. If you do not see the Set Up Your Email window with Please enter your email address text box:
    1. From the Tools drop-down, click Accounts....

    2. In the lower-left of the window, click the plus sign (+).

    3. From the drop-down list, click New Account....
  4. In the Please enter your email address text box, type: VTusername@vt.edu.
  5. Click Continue.
  6. On the Virginia Tech login page, enter your Hokies username and passphrase.

  7. Click Sign In.

  8. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete authentication with your second factor.
  9. Click Sign In.
  10. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete authentication with your second factor.
  11. Once the account has been added, click Done.
  12. Optionally, to set up the Virginia Tech address book:
    1. From the Tools drop-down, click Accounts....

    2. In the left menu column, click your Exchange account.
    3. Click Advanced....

    4. Under Directory service, in the Server: text box, type: gc.w2k.vt.edu.
    5. Under Directory service, place a check in the Use SSL to connect (recommended) check box.
    6. Under Directory service, place a check in the Log in with my Exchange account credentials check box.
    7. Click OK.

Outlook for Windows

  1. This assumes that you have already downloaded and installed outlook. For instructions, see the instructions for students or instructions for faculty and staff.
  2. Start Outlook.
  3. Click File.

  5. From the drop-down, click Account Settings....

  6. In the Email Account window, click New....

  7. In the Outlook setup window, enter your VTusername@vt.edu.

  8. Click Connect.

  9. Enter your VTusername email <VTusername@vt.edu>.

  10. Click Next.
  11. On the Virginia Tech Enter password page, enter your Hokies username and passphrase.
  12. Click Sign In.
  13. If checked, clear the Set-up Outlook Mobile on my phone, too check box.

Android

To connect to your Exchange email account using the Microsoft Outlook app:

  1. From the Google Play app store, download and install the Outlook app.
  2. When the installation is finished, start the Outlook app.
  3.  Tap Get Started.
  4. In the Email Address text box type: VTusername@vt.edu.
    (If an extra space character was added at the end by autocorrect, delete the extra space.)
  5. Tap CONTINUE.
  6. You will see the Virginia Tech heading. In the Password text box, type your Hokies ID (Exchange Online) passphrase.
  7. Tap Sign In.
  8. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete authentication with your second factor.
  9. If prompted to add another account, tap SKIP.
  10. Swipe through the tutorial screens.
  11. To close the tutorial, on the last tutorial screen, near the lower-right of the screen, tap the checkmark.

iOS (iPhone, iPad)

To avoid calendar syncing problems, 4Help recommends performing calendaring functions in the Office 365 Mail App (Exchange Online with a Web Browser) instead of on mobile devices.

To connect to your Exchange email account using the Microsoft Outlook app:

  1. From the Apple app store, download and install the Outlook app.
  2. When the installation is finished, start the Outlook app.
  3.  Tap Get Started.
  4. In the Email Address text box type: VTusername@vt.edu.
    (If an extra space character was added at the end by autocorrect, delete the extra space.)
  5. Tap Add Account.
  6. You will see the Virginia Tech heading. In the Password text box, type your Hokies ID (Exchange Online) passphrase.
  7. Tap Sign In.
  8. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete authentication with your second factor.
  9. When prompted to add another account, tap Maybe Later.
  10. Swipe through the tutorial screens.
  11. To close the tutorial, on the last tutorial screen, near the lower-right of the screen, tap the right arrow.
